Thank You From Lowell Elementary School

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

On behalf of the Lowell Bayside Academy PTA and the Auction Committee, we thank you for your very generous donation to our elementary school for the “A Night on Santorini” Lowell Auction 2008. Because of your participation, the event was a tremendous success.

The proceeds from the auction will go directly to supporting the Lowell PTA programs that our elementary school students love. Your support directly improves the educational experience of the Lowell Elementary School students.

Chapman University DOC Student Sends Her Regards

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Hello Bay Shore Congregation! I hope you are all doing well. I have just begun my spring semester of my junior year here at Chapman and I am loving it. Although, it has presented many challenges already! This semester I am taking the second semester of organic chemistry, calculus two, genetics, jazz dance and dance in world cultures. I am really happy to be able to have time to enroll in a dance class; it has made all the stress seem a little less since I started to dance again!
We just started learning a new dance in jazz class and it is a more lyrical and expressive piece so that has been fun and a little different than what we usually do. Calculus has so far proved to be a challenge, but it makes it that much more rewarding when I can get the right answer to the problem. I am having a lot of fun in Organic Chemistry lab this semester. Last week we had to determine unknown chemicals. We find out next week if we figured out the correct molecular formula for our unknown compounds. In genetics, we already have our first big exam next week; it feels like the year is just flying by. So far, in dance and world cultures we have learned about dances from Mexico, Native American, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and a few from Africa. It is really interesting to see how much dance is a huge part of some cultures and how expressive it can be and how it tells a story.

For spring break this year I am going back to Oregon to see my mom and then together we are going to drive my car back down here. It will be a mini road trip and some much needed time for us to spend together. I am planning to stay in Orange for the summer and I am applying for an intern-ship program at Hoag Hospital in Newport. I have my interview at the end of March. I am hoping I get accepted to the program, it is a really great opportunity to start learning about patient care. I want to say thank you again for all of your continued support, it really does mean a lot to me, I am able to be at Chapman because of the DOC scholarship and I have had so any great opportunities thanks to DOC. So, thank you. I hope you are all in good health and spirits as winter ends and spring begins!

Peace, Marissa Boardman

(Marissa will join us at worship March 30 to bring greetings from Chapman. The Missions Commission sent our annual $1,000 donation for UCC and Disciples of Christ scholarships.)

Bay Shore Friends China Presentation by Bill Wade

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

All members and friends of the church are invited to join us on Friday, April 18, for our next program and potluck meeting. Our program features the photographs of Belmont Shores’ own professional photographer William Wade from his trip to China. If you attended the Bay Shore Friends meeting in February 2007 when we were privileged to see Mr. Wade’s photos of Tuscany, you know what a terrific program this will be!

If you’re coming for the potluck, please call Mary Lou Nicolai to coordinate food assignments. Please remember to bring your food at 5:45 p.m., and remember to bring your own table service. If you are coming just for the program, please arrive by 7:00. Members of Bay Shore Friends should note also that dues ($10.00 per person) are now payable to our Treasurer, Bill Nicolai. You may give a check to him at church, or may mail it to him at 5503 Seaside Walk, LB 90803.

March 16th

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

The processional hymn is “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna ”. The tune Ellacombe as we
know it was first published in 1868; however, the tune was adapted from an older tune
written in 1784. The tune has been set to numerous words, and, for Palm Sunday there are no other words more appropriate than those written by Jeannette Threlfall (1821-1880) which describe Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The text is one of joy, although Ms. Threlfall suffered from severe disabilities due to two accidents that left her crippled, mutilated and an invalid. She cheerfully and patiently bore her pain and difficulties as revealed in her poetry.

May our worship together guide us as we celebrate with palms and reflect on the
passion.
