Alicia’s Accents – June 29th

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The prelude and postlude will be arrangements of the hymn tune “Ellacombe” which first appeared in its present form in 1868, in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient and Modern. However, the tune is an adaptation of an older tune written in 1784. The tune has ten different sets of text, and the text providing my inspiration is “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”. The offertory will be an arrangement of the hymn “When In Our Music God Is Glorified” (Chalice Hymnal, No. 7). The hymn tune was written in 1904 for the text “For All The Saints”. In 1971 Fred Pratt Green, a Methodist minister in England, wrote the words that express the connection between music and worship. The second verse is my prayer: How often, making music, we have found a new dimension in the world of sound, as worship moved us to a more profound “Allelulia!”

The Rev. Charles Ensley’s Sermon:
“THE  TAPESTRY  OF  THE  CHURCH”
This isn’t about some woven wall-hanging in our church. It is an acknowledgement and appreciation of the yarns of many colors and varieties that make up our denomination, our city, and our congregation. Where’s your place in this “exasperating, heady mix”?

Hank Snapper Speaks to Bay Shore Friends June 20

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

On Friday, June 20, the Bay Shore Friends program features a member of our congregation, Hank Snapper, who will speak to us of his trip to Israel, where his family was honored as “Righteous Among Nations” for their courage and compassion in hiding from the Nazis a family of
seven Jews.

Even if you are not a member of the Bay
Shore Friends, all members and friends of the church are invited to join us in our potluck and program in the Concert Hall.  We start at 6 o’clock, so if you are coming for the potluck, please have your food at the church by 5:45 p.m.  Please call either Sydney Dooley or Janet Stiens to coordinate food assignments. If you are coming just for the program, please arrive by 7:00 p.m.

Support for The Carillon

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

We’re all familiar with the saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”  Whether you receive our weekly newsletter, The Carillon, electronically or in printed format, there are costs related to its publication; and as with seemingly everything else in the economy, those costs are escalating.  This year’s budget includes an income line item for financial support for The Carillon; so this is a reminder and a request for you to consider making a contribution.

Bay Shore Church is also asked to contribute “per capita dues” to our UCC Conference and Association Offices.  (The latter authorizes ministers, and provides staff support during our current Associate Minister search.)  We have not, traditionally, budgeted income lines for these dues; but if you would like to contribute towards these expenses, we certainly won’t turn you down.  Conference dues amount to $11/member/year, while Association dues are $2/member/year.

When making your contribution, please specify in the memo line of your check what your contribution is for; a form outlining these three contribution options is also available below for you to include with your cash or check, payable to Bay Shore Church.
