Alicia’s Accents – August 3

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I am consistently amazed at the stories about hymns, and the story for “How Firm A Foundation” (Chalice Hymnal No. 618) is no exception. General Curtis Guild, Jr., wrote in The Sunday School Times how this hymn was sung on a famous Christmas morning. “The Seventh Army Corps was encamped on the hills above Havana, Cuba, on Christmas Eve of 1898—a beautiful tropical night. Suddenly a sentinel from the camp of the Forty- ninth Iowa called, Number ten; twelve o’clock, and all’s well! A strong voice raised the chorus, and manly voices joined in until the whole regiment was singing. Then the Sixth Missouri added its voices, and the Fourth Virginia, and all the rest, ’til there, on the long ridges above the great city whence Spanish tyranny once went forth to enslave the New World, a whole American army corps was singing: ‘Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed; for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.’ The Northern soldier knew the hymn as one he had learned beside his mother’s knee. To the Southern soldier it was that and something more—it was the favorite hymn of General Robert E. Lee, and was sung at that great commander’s funeral. Protestant and Catholic, South and North, singing together on Christmas day in the morning—that’s an American army!”

May our worship together guide us to a closer communion with God.

Associate Minister Profile in Works

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

The members of the Associate Minister Search Committee have been hard at work, meeting most Wednesday evenings, compiling demographics and financial information about our congregation for the 18 page Congregational Profile that is required to be submitted before we can advertise the open position and begin to receive profiles from qualified candidates.  When the job description is approved by the Personnel Committee, it will be submitted to our Board of Stewards for their approval before we disseminate it.

We know it doesn’t appear that much progress is being made if you look at the chart in the Concert Hall, but preparation of a quality profile to best portray our church and congregation takes time.

“With My Own Two Hands”…

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

…is the theme for summer camp 2008 at Pilgrim Pines Camp.  Each day, at morning sing, campers were introduced to the theme of the day, using Christian scriptures with an analogous verse from one of the world religions to demonstrate that we, too, with our own two hands, can make a difference in the world.  I know that among the 22 minis (1st-3rd graders) I worked with, they could think of ways they could help others, thus making a difference.  (Although one five-year-old was anxious to draw flames, so on his picture, he said he could help his mom if the house was on fire!)

Eleven campers from Bay Shore Church, with a couple of their friends, were at camp week 3, July 13-19.  I was there in my usual role as mini cabin counselor, along with Max Vilander, one of my former minis, now a senior at Wilson High, who was my cabin co-counselor.  Taylor Tschudin was a counselor with the juniors, and Michael Elliott is on the camp staff all summer as a “floater”—a different group each week.  Campers and counselors combined totaled 208 for the week.

I am very proud of the leadership Bay Shore has grown and provided to the camp in this and past years.  Kirsten Sumpter and Christie Pearce were cabin counselors week 1; Julia Light will do the same week 5.  Many of these counselors and directors began as minis, and continue in their dedication to the values at camp.  We also have additional campers who are attending weeks 5 and 6.

For the first time this year, camp is going for six weeks, incorporating counselors-in-training into week 1.  Last year, camp had 650 campers.  The goal for 2008 was 750.

At Annual Gathering of the Southern California Nevada Conference in June, it was announced that it was over 800, and last week, I found it is now 900!  Much credit goes to executive director Phil Geissal and program director topher nichols, who both traveled extensively throughout the Conference visiting churches this spring to encourage enrollment and participation.

Our church and Conference is fortunate to have Pilgrim Pines exist and expand since 1944.  For 40 years, Pinesters (mentally challenged adults) have been included.  Many of you attended, and/or sent children and grandchildren.  Thus, the tradition continues.

New Pew Brochures in Place

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

This week, the pew racks include our new pew brochure.  The Parish Outreach Commission revised the former brochure with updated pictures and information, printed on heavier stock.  The church purchased rights to the cover photo used by F&M Bank for their 2006 Christmas card, and taken by Santa Barbara photographer Bob Blackwell.  The brochures explain our church and offer a welcome to visitors, and those who attend weddings, memorial services, concerts and recitals here.  Worshippers are welcome to give a copy to a friend who might be interested in Bay Shore Church.
