9:30 a.m.    Worship     Sunday School     Nursery

The Rev. Charles Ensley’s Sermon:
“THIS  IS  NO  TIME  FOR  TALENTS”

Some parables of Jesus are difficult to understand; some seem even subversive.  In today’s economic climate, we would praise someone who buried their money, thus preserving the principal.  Wouldn’t we like to know how the other two entrusted with five and two talents invested them and didn’t lose the principal in a down market?  Or is this about money at all?

The Rev. Charles Ensley’s Sermon: “BE  PREPARED”
Ten bridesmaids (a big wedding party!) went to meet the groom.  Five were ready, five were not.  What does this ancient Palestinian wedding custom say to us today?  That we ought to have big weddings, or that we
need to be prepared?  That was Jesus’ warning.  Prepared for what?

Jesus knows that money is a major factor in our lives, and he focuses on it a great deal in his ministry.  In fact, his focus on money is second only to the kingdom of God.  In these weeks of severe economic turmoil in the world’s financial markets, what would Jesus tell us to do with what’s in our wallets?

Taizé and Communion Vesper Service Sunday Oct. 12 at 5:00 pm

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

On Sunday, October 12, the day of the Long Beach Marathon, Bay Shore Church will hold its Sunday service at 5:00 p.m. This year, as we did last year, we have decided to hold a Taizé service in the Gabrielson Chapel. For an increasing number of North Americans, the name Taizé evokes a certain style of worship and music that has become popular in more and more churches, and with retreats or gatherings focused on young adults. Taizé is in fact an ecumenical community of brothers located in the small village of that name in the Burgundy region of eastern France. In many places across the world, people, young and old, organize ecumenical prayers using music from Taizé. These times of prayer are varied and are integrated in appropriate ways into the life of the local Church. In our evening service, our Chancel Choir will lead the congregation in the reading of scripture, prayers, and the singing of songs created in the Taizé tradition. Communion will be served.  We hope that this service will be a meaningful time of prayer and reflection. Join us!
