Sarah has attended Bay Shore Church her whole life and has been a member since June 2000.  She has lived in Long Beach for 23 years.  Sarah’s favorite church involvement is playing handbells in the Bay Shore Bells.  Her parents are Don & Debby Griffin, and she has a twin sister, Virginia Halverson.  Sarah graduated from Calvin College, MI, in December 2007, and is the receptionist at Oggi Domani Hair Salon.  She enjoys reading, spending time with her boyfriend, Jeff, and hanging out with her sister & brother-in-law.

Christie grew up attending Claremont UCC and has been coming to Bay Shore Church for one year.  Her favorite church involvement has been attending, working for, and volunteering for Pilgrim Pines Camp for the past 22 years.  She really sees God working in outdoor ministry.  Christie also enjoys spending time at the Bay Shore Retreat in Sky Forest with Kirsten Sumpter, Amy Ensley, and other friends.  She works for the Orange County Department of Education, Inside the Outdoors, planning community programs.  Christie likes soccer and bike-riding.

Guest Speaker  LAURA HILLMAN
We welcome this Holocaust survivor, who spent her teen years in Nazi concentration camps, where all her family died.  Her’s is a story of resiliency, hope and faith in the midst of terrible times.  Saved by being on Oskar Schindler’s list, Laura has made it her mission since her 2005 book, I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree, to speak to schools and other audiences on the need for justice for all.

Bethany has attended Bay Shore Church her whole life and has been a member since May 2004. She has always lived in Long Beach. Bethany’s favorite church involvement is attending the Sunday service when she comes home from school.  Bethany is a junior at Whittier College, majoring in Social Work.  She is also involved in student government at Whittier College.  Bethany’s parents are Tom and Kathy Walzcak, and she has two brothers, Chris and Alex.

Schindler’s List Survivor Speaks in Worship – June 15th

Laura Hillman, a Holocaust survivor, was saved from death in a concentration camp by being on Oskar Schindler’s list.  She will be our guest speaker in worship on June 15. Her book, I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree, is available at church for our cost of $6.  Middle & High school students will remain in worship that day to hear this special speaker.  See also the article on the adjoining page about the June 20 Bay Shore Friends dinner and Hank Snapper speaking about his family hiding a Jewish family during WWII.

Jacob has attended Bay Shore Church for 6 years, and he has lived in Long Beach almost 10 years.  His favorite church involvements are Project Love and 6-2-8.  Jacob’s parents are Jay and Christi Dysart, and he has two younger brothers, Lucas and Micah.  Jacob is in 7th grade at Rogers Middle School, and he likes to work with technology and play sports and guitar.

Communion Early This Sunday; Installation of New Officers

On June 1, the sacrament of communion will be served in the first half of the worship service so children may partici-pate, before they go to Sunday School.  That will be followed by the installation of our church’s new officers and commission members who were elected at our Annual Meeting on May 18.

Schindler’s List Survivor Speaks

Over 4,000 American troops have been killed serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in the past five years. This Memorial Day weekend, we will pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifice—“their last full measure” in the service of our country, fighting for liberty among people who have not experienced democracy.

Jay has been a member of Bay Shore Church for 6+ years. He enjoys being involved in the Church in small ways in lots of areas, such as singing in the choir when he can, serving on the Pastoral Relations Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Commission, and helping the church grow online through podcasting and e-mail newsletters. Jay has lived in Long Beach for 10 years and is married to Christi. They have 3 sons who bring him great joy, named Jacob, Lucas, and Micah. Jay also pursues artistic interests with small local theatres and the connected fabric of the digital online world.
